“YOU didn’t even call me.” Those were the first words out of Mitch’s mouth when Sam got home. He was sitting on Sam’s couch, just waiting, and maybe that was a little weird, but fuck it. He hadn’t wanted to take a chance on missing Sam, and he still had keys, so yeah. He was waiting for Sam in Sam’s apartment. Actually, it might be weirder than Mitch had thought because he was suddenly seeing the creepy in his own actions, now that it was finally too late to change his mind.

Sam froze in the doorway just long enough that Mitch saw the smile that had appeared as soon as Sam had tracked his voice to the couch. Like there was any tracking involved. Please. This is his place, and I’m not exactly hiding. If I were, this would be exactly the wrong way to do it.

“Mitch,” Sam said after that frozen moment passed, along with that smile. “I wasn’t. I mean, I didn’t think you’d be… you know. Here. Shouldn’t you be at work?”

Oh, to hell with it. If Sam wanted to play it that way, Mitch would follow along. For a little while, anyway. “Oh please. I have six weeks’ worth of vacation days built up, and I’m not afraid to use them,” Mitch said lightly as he pushed up from the couch and closed the distance to Sam. “Like I’d be anywhere that boring when my best friend was due home after a month.” He pulled the suitcase out of Sam’s hand and set it on the floor. “Even if that same best friend totally ignored me for weeks and weeks. Jackass.” Mitch offered a sweet smile that apparently shocked Sam into laughing.

“Sorry,” Sam answered, though he seemed a bit tentative. “I guess I thought we were… fighting or something?” Yeah, like that tone of voice was anything but confused. God, Sam was just too cute sometimes. Most times, really.

Mitch snorted softly. “If that was a question, my answer is ‘or something’. Because that wasn’t fighting, Sam. That was you running away and leaving me here to wonder whether you hated me or not. The radio silence really didn’t help with that, just so you know.” A lump formed in his throat, leading Mitch to believe that there was more truth to his own words than teasing. His gaze dropped to the floor, and he clenched his hands into fists, more from girding his metaphorical loins than from anger. “You don’t hate me, do you? For the… God, the kiss? I didn’t think it was that bad.”

Maybe Sam’s mother was wrong. Mitch was pretty sure that standing in a doorway blinking wasn’t one of the universal signs of love. “Well, let’s get you unpacked,” he added, rushing on. He bent to snatch up Sam’s suitcase, then started for the bedroom, where he set the case on the mattress. “You’ll have to let me know which things need to be washed. I can start a load while you put away the rest.
